Insurance Payment

Beyond Primary Care does not participate with any insurance companies or government insurance for payments to the clinic. The insurance model perpetuates the “quick fix” approach, without allocating adequate time to determine the root cause of discomfort or disease and not allowing time to focus on prevention.

It is well known that medical expenses are the number one cause of bankruptcy in the United States. However, what people don’t realize is that 75% of those individuals actually did have some type of health insurance. Health insurance is the ONLY insurance that bankrupts folks when they use it.

Dr. O’Boyle has very mindfully chosen the direct primary care payment system because he believes in making healthcare affordable and accessible to everyone. By cutting out the middlemen and remaining out-of-network, the physicians at Beyond Primary Care can collaborate with patients to make health decisions without interference from insurers.

+ What do I do about my existing insurance?

Health insurance is still important for everything outside of Beyond Primary Care. Insurance plays its originally intended role by covering emergencies, severe illness, surgeries, and catastrophic matters. For example, you use your auto insurance for accidents. You don’t use your auto insurance for oil changes, windshield wiper replacements, tune-ups, or brake pad changes. Your homeowner’s insurance kicks in if a tree falls on your roof, but not if it needs new shingles. We expect to pay out-of-pocket for these routine things. The vast majority of primary care services are actually more affordable than if we left out insurance claims all together.
Patients with any insurance can enroll in Beyond Primary Care, but your insurance plan is between you and the insurance company. Usually, insurance will cover tests ordered and referrals by an “out of network” physician, but that is not always the case. Patients should check with their insurer for the specifics of their policy. Be wary of HMO and Medicare Advantage policies that require you to have orders approved by an insurance oriented provider.

+ Do you accept my insurance?

No. That's the main feature of this practice. We forego insurance payments in order to save our patients from the arbitrary, intrusive decisions that inevitably come with third-party payers.

+ What if I have Medicare?

Dr. O’Boyle does not participate in Medicare. Patients with Medicare are welcome to see either doctor, but they are not contracted with Medicare. Normal primary care services provided by Dr. O’Boyle are not covered or reimbursable by Medicare due to federal regulations. Medicare will generally cover ordered imaging tests, outside labs, and referrals.

+ What if I have Medicaid?

Dr. O’Boyle does not participate in Medicaid. Patients with Medicaid are welcome to join the practice, but they do not accept Medicaid payments. Medicaid will generally cover ordered tests and referrals.

+ What if I am uninsured?

Dr. O’Boyle hopes that patients without health insurance will find Beyond Primary Care to be a refreshing change. The fee schedules are designed to make primary care affordable and accessible to everyone, insured or not.

What Coverage Pairs Best with Beyond Primary Care?

+ Employer Based Healthcare

If you have the opportunity to choose a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), this is preferable. If you work for a small or medium-sized business, you might consider asking your employer to offer direct primary care (DPC) as an option to yourself and other employees. Learn more here.

+ High Deductible Health Plans

Beyond Primary Care works well in conjunction with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), commonly referred to as ‘catastrophic insurance.’ Combining a clinic membership with an HDHP addresses the main drivers of increasing cost in healthcare. It allows individuals and families to have extra money on hand every month, often saving thousands of dollars per year, while still allowing families to be proactive about their health and ancillary medical costs such as medications, labs and imaging.

+ Short-Term Limited Duration Policy

These are typically High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs). These policies are commonly used for people who may have changed jobs, do not qualify for a subsidy through the healthcare marketplace, young people who have been recently removed from a parent’s coverage, and people who have retired but are not yet eligible for Medicare.

+ Healthshares

A health sharing program is a non-insurance option that functions as a type of healthcare cooperative where members make monthly contributions to a pool managed by a company. These organizations started out as faith-based operations and have been around for decades. Now, there are many options for both religious and secular healthshares. Healthshares are not insurance, so please review the graph by clicking the button below and call the organizations to learn more about their options.

+ What if I am uninsured?

Dr. O’Boyle and Dr. Lindow hope that patients without health insurance will find Beyond Primary Care to be a refreshing change. The fee schedules are designed to make primary care affordable and accessible to everyone, insured or not.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

HSAs and FSAs are a type of savings account where individuals or families can set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. Like hundreds of other DPC clinics across the nation, Beyond Primary Care allows our members to use HSA or FSA funds to pay for their physician services.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) defines DPC as a primary care service, not insurance or a health plan.

According to IRS publication 502, medical expenses are the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, and for the purpose of affecting any part or function of the body. These expenses include payments for legal medical services rendered by physicians, surgeons, dentists and other medical practitioners.

Qualified or eligible medical expenses are described by IRS code section 213(d). This list is long and includes:

  • Physician services

  • Blood tests

  • Prescription drugs

Note, this is not a substitute for tax advice. If you still have any questions regarding your personal HSA/FSA, please talk to your personal accountant.

Payment

Payments to Beyond Primary Care are preferred to be made by automatic payment through your checking account (ACH). With ACH payments, your bank account is charged directly using your account and routing numbers instead of through a third party such as a debit or credit card. The business cost associated with using your ACH is much lower compared to the transaction fees associated with credit or debit card payments.

Beyond Primary Care does accept credit cards, HSA / FSA debit cards, and non-HSA / FSA debit cards. Because of the higher costs associated with using these cards, a small convenience fee is added to each monthly charge.

+ Is there an enrollment fee?

There is a $150 enrollment fee per household.

+ Is there a re-enrollment fee if I was a previous member?

Yes. If you were previously a member with Beyond Primary Care and would like to re-enroll, there is a fee of $300 per household.

+ Is there a set amount of time I have to sign up for?

Yes, we do have a six month minimum enrollment period. Even though we can routinely see our patients for same day or next day appointments, we are not an urgent care that offers one-off visits. We love continuity with our patients and developing long-term relationships. After the six month minimum enrollment period, all individual agreements are month to month.
