How CBD Works

CBD is a compound derived from the marijuana plant called cannabidol, or CBD. The best-known compound from the marijuana plant is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Unlike THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, CBD is not thought to have intoxicating effects. CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors found through out the body that control some of our most vital functions to help us perform and feel our best.

What does CBD Do?

Yes, there is evidence that CBD regulates important bodily functions. These functions include: Pain

  • Inflammation

  • Mood

  • Energy metabolism

  • Sleep

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

CBD doesn’t work for all medical conditions, though. As example, there is no evidence CBD cures cancer. Everyone’s body is unique and reacts differently to mediations, supplements, and even treatments like CBD. Those reactions may vary in effectiveness and duration.

Is CBD Safe?

For adults, CBD appears to be a very safe product. A 2018 World Health Organization Report called CBD “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile.” It also found that CBD was not addictive. CBD may interact with certain medications, so always check with your physician prior to use. Avoid illegally sold CBD products, sometimes called ‘bath salts.’ These products may impair mental function in some people and have a detrimental risk.

How to Take CBD

It is important to take notes when first starting your CBD regimen so that you can figure out what dose works best for you. CBD dosing is a bell-shaped curve with an optimal peak. Low doses of CBD can be energizing while higher doses can be relaxing. You may prefer different dosing strategies at different points in your day. Just like medications, consistency is important with taking the CBDs daily. A good piece of wisdom regarding starting CBD is “start low and go slow.”

CBD can be taken orally, as a tablet, chewable, or tincture. CBD can also be incorporated into solutions such as foams and topically administered.
