Frequently Asked Questions

A Direct Primary Care Practice- Where you have Direct Access to your Doctor.

Beyond Primary Care is a new approach to family medicine and addiction medicine that creates the times and space your health deserves. Our clinic follows the ‘Direct Primary Care’ model of healthcare where our patients deal ONLY with their doctor and not health insurance companies.  We believe in strong seamless relationships between the physician and our patients, affordable and timely care, and personalized care- not the ‘cookie cutter’ approach found in big hospital systems. If you believe in these tenets like we do, we would love for you to be patients at our clinic.

The monthly membership covers five-star care by providing open access to our services. Feel free to visit us in our office, call us when you need us, text us, or email us. You can schedule your annual wellness exam, receive basic office procedures, and optimize your health while under our care. Our members will also have access to wholesale blood work and medications- often less than a copay with insurance, as well as reduced rates for imaging services.

There is no sign-up fee. We do require your debit or credit card information to hold your first appointment. Your card will not be initially charged. No shows or cancellations within 12 hours to your scheduled appointment will be subject to a non-refundable $50 fee. When you visit, just sign-up for the medical membership, enroll in the easy monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payment system and start accessing great care. It’s that simple.

As a Family Medicine Physician, we provide care for patients at a full spectrum of ages; including caring for newborns through teenage years. We are happy to accept children when there is an enrolled parent. Children without enrolled parents are also accepted, but at a higher membership rate.

Naturally we provide such care – yet another freedom we enjoy together as a result of Beyond Primary Care’s independence from the restrictions of third-party payment. Because we know you well, we can streamline your care when you’re sick away from home. In the age of telemedicine, many illnesses can be diagnosed and treated with a simple conversation by phone or webcam. We’ll locate the nearest pharmacy and order the medications most appropriate for your present circumstances.

Yes. We offer addiction treatment with buprenorphine and other brand name medications. Due to DEA restrictions on this and the small size of our practice, space is limited.  Since this includes more frequent visits and testing, this is offered as an additional service beyond our basic membership. See our Addiction Recovery page for more details.

Legal services such as medical testimony are not included in the membership but are available.

No, your membership does not cover hospitalization costs. If the physicians at Beyond Primary Care affiliated with any hospital, we will have to operate according to their rules, which means taking insurance. Our physician is not affiliated with any hospital network. However, in providing superb care with unprecedented sorts of access, we seek to prevent or reduce hospitalizations and specialty referrals. If you need inpatient care, you are free to go to any hospital of your choosing.  Wherever you go, we will work closely with your inpatient care team to ensure a seamless transition back to our office.

No, a membership does NOT constitute health insurance. Beyond Primary Care will work with you and the industry leaders in health insurance in Michigan who are able to build custom health insurance or health sharing  plans for the needs of you and your family.

No. That’s the main feature of this practice. We forgo insurance payments in order to save our patients from the arbitrary, intrusive decisions that inevitably follow with third-party payers. Furthermore, this arrangement frees us from the typical contractual agreements that prevent physicians from offering wholesale prices on laboratory tests, imaging, and medications.

We encourage everyone to carry at minimum catastrophic or high deductible policy to cover major expenses and illnesses. However, we don’t require this as a condition for membership. Beyond Primary Care will work with you and the industry leaders in health insurance in Michigan who are able to build custom health insurance or health share plans for the needs of you and your family.

Usually insurances will cover tests ordered and referrals by an “out of network” physician, but that is not always the case. Patients should check with their insurer for the specifics of their policy. Be wary of HMO and Medicare Advantage policies that require you to have orders approved by an insurance oriented provider.

This varies considerably depending upon the insurer and policy. Many private insurers will cover most  care by an out of network physician. Medicaid and Medicare do not reimburse patients for our primary care fees but will generally cover ordered tests and consults.

Medicare patients are welcome! Medicare patients will enter into direct contract with the doctor at Beyond Primary Care, thus medicare will not be billed for your services. Medicare will generally cover ordered tests and consults.

Medicaid patients are welcome! Medicaid will generally cover ordered tests and consults but will not reimburse patients for our primary care fees.

Our prices are low because we no longer incur the expenses of processing insurance payments. A typical primary care practice spends 50-60% of revenue on overhead, including clerical staff to bill insurers for patient appointments and treatment. Besides the lower overhead due to our direct primary care model, we’ve designed our practice to function effectively with fewer staff and other expenses.

While this was common decades ago, there are a lot of drawbacks.  When a physician only gets paid for office visits, care outside of office visits, such as over the phone, is discouraged and fees per office visit are much higher.  Practices in that model need a much larger patient panel and schedule more patients per day with less time per patient. It limits the ability to update and adopt new medications and new ways of medicine. Even Medicare has realized this and has instituted a monthly fee for primary care of patients with chronic problems.

No it is not. Concierge medicine does some of the same things but uses what we call a retainer for their services. They charge you a retainer typically in the range of $2000-$3000, but still charge your insurance company for any visits.

We understand that your needs may change, and we want to help you through whatever transitions you’re making. If you need to cancel, we would appreciate a 30 day notice.

Yes, if you were previously a member with Beyond Primary care and would like to re-enroll, there is a re-enrollment fee of $300.
